About Bear Naked Adventures

Picture
Based in Newport, WA, Bear Naked Adventures began in 2011 as an idea. A group of local high school students wanted to start a business and provide a service that anyone could enjoy. Bear Naked Adventures is the result of their hard work.  Bear Naked Adventures began providing affordable sit-on-top kayak rentals in the summer of 2011. It is a student-based micro-enterprise where students can learn the ins and outs of a business. Thanks to the Pend Oreille Microenterprise Development Organization and the  Pend Oreille Utility District, funds were provided in order to start up Bear Naked Adventures.

The Beginning: Bear Naked Adventures was founded by local high school marketing students who wanted to take their education in the classroom to the real world. These students, obviously trekking into the unfamiliar business world, had guidance, funding, and assistance from many community groups and organizations such as PUD, POMDO, the Rotary Club, the City of Oldtown, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Bear Naked Adventures Today:  Among the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Newport couldn’t be a more perfect setting for a day on the river! The Pend Oreille River, one of the few rivers in the nation that flow North, is nestled between beautiful scenery and gorgeous mountains. With our convenient transportation, you won’t have to worry about how to get back up river! Bear Naked Adventures is still run by students that include college graduates, and  college students. The business is still dedicated to ensuring a fun and scenic time on the river.

2012 Student Bios:

Frank Lentini graduated from West Valley High School in 2008 with a 3.4 gpa and was the captain of the soccer team his senior year. After that Frank attended school at Eastern Washington University, where his love for the outdoors grew tremendously and decided he wanted to earn a degree in Outdoor Recreation. Over the last two years Frank has gone through multiple outdoor trainings and certifications such as White Water Raft Guide Training, Kayking Instructor, Water Rescue Technician (WRT)  and PADI Diving Open Water certification. While getting these certifications Frank worked at the campus outdoor program, EPIC Adventures, where he was the student manager, raft guide, kayak instructor, and safety boater for the business and their trips. In June of 2012 Frank graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Outdoor Recreation.
Madie Merrill has lived and gone to school in Newport since she was four and has now graduated from Newport High School. Madie was involved in many school activities such as: soccer, softball, instrumental band, pep band, and youth group. DECA and SkillsUSA are also two CTE (career and technical education ) organizations that Madie was devoted to. Going to state for Business Law and Ethics for DECA and being a state officer for SkillsUSA; Washington made Madie a great applicant for her part in running Bear Naked Adventures. When the opportunity
arose at school, Madie was immediately prepared to dedicate her skills and leadership to the job.
